SUBSTRUCTURE Summit

Summits across India for dams, hydropower, tunnels and ground engineering.

SUBSTRUCTURE Summit brings together the owners, engineers, contractors and researchers who build, run and repair dams, hydropower plants, tunnels, highways and railways. We plan a summit every quarter, in cities across India, and we co-organise with other organisers.

Why now

Glacial lake outbursts, floods and landslides keep damaging the assets the country is building, while public money for mitigation and dam repair is already approved.

  • 1,200MW

Teesta-III dam at Chungthang, Sikkim, destroyed by a glacial lake outburst flood on 4 October 2023.1

  • Rs10,211crore

approved for DRIP Phase II and III, the rehabilitation of 736 dams from April 2021 to March 2031.2

  • Rs1,000crore

approved for landslide mitigation in 15 states under the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Project.3

  • Rs150crore

approved to reduce the risk of glacial lake outburst floods in four hill states.4

The owners who build and run these assets, the states that spend the mitigation funds and the engineers who repair failures rarely meet in one room. Each SUBSTRUCTURE Summit brings them together.

Themes in preparation

Each summit takes one theme and runs on case studies: what happened, what was done and what worked. Dates and cities are announced as each summit is confirmed.

Theme

Himalayan hazards and the repair of what they damage

  • Glacial lake outbursts, floods and landslides: Sikkim 2023 and the recent floods in Nepal
  • Hazard mapping, monitoring and early warning
  • Rehabilitation of dams, barrages, tunnels and slopes

Theme

Highway slopes and tunnels

  • Landslides on highways and hill roads
  • Slope stabilisation, drainage and rockfall protection
  • Water ingress and lining repair in road tunnels

Theme

Rail tunnels

  • Tunnelling in weak and fractured rock
  • Lining leaks and contact grouting
  • Landslides on railway lines

Theme

Dam safety and canal seepage

  • Seepage control and grouting in dams and barrages
  • Spillway and gallery repair
  • Canal lining and seepage

Who it is for

  • Owners and operators

Of dams, hydropower plants, tunnels, metros, highways, railways and canals.

  • States

Disaster management authorities and state institutes that run the mitigation programmes.

  • Engineers and contractors

The people who design, build, inspect and repair these works.

  • Researchers

In geology, hydrology, geotechnics and early warning.

Co-organise with us

Running a conference, seminar or technical day in these sectors? We are open to co-organising with associations, institutes, owners and other event organisers.

What we bring

  • a technical programme built around case studies
  • coverage and proceedings in SUBSTRUCTURE Journal
  • the same published rules on honoraria, travel and sponsorship
Tell us your event, city and datessummit@substructuresummit.com

Speak, sponsor or exhibit

We are looking for case studies of hazards and repairs, with the data behind them, from owners, contractors, consultants and researchers.

To propose a talk, send

  • a title and a summary of about 150 words
  • the speaker’s name, role and organisation
  • the theme it fits

Partners

Knowledge partnership, sponsorship and exhibition stands are open for discussion for each summit. Write to us for the options. We plan to publish the proceedings in SUBSTRUCTURE Journal.

Rules we publish

  • No honoraria to serving officials.
  • The same documented travel terms for every speaker.
  • No sponsorship from any organisation in a live tender, bid evaluation or contract negotiation with the organiser.
  • Sponsored content is labelled as sponsored.
